Cleaning Hacks You Never Knew You Needed!

by Linda Cleans 02 Jun 2023

We all love a good cleaning hack, anything to make the grimmest jobs that little less awful... Here are just a few to list that might help you!

  • Clean your oven with a dishwasher tablet

We know this sounds bizarre but it turns out a dishwasher tablet can be used for so much more than just cleaning your dishes! All you have to do is use 1 (maybe 2 depending how dirty your oven is) and dip it into some warm, making sure it doesn’t start to dissolve and crumble but just enough to absorb. Then simply place onto your oven door with your palm and start wiping away!

  • Use Vinegar to Unclog Taps

If you have hard water like we do where you live, you may find that your taps on your kitchen sink and shower head gets clogged from time to time. Grab a freezer food bag, elastic band and white vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the bag and tie it to the taps and shower head so they are submerged in the vinegar. Leave for roughly 10 minutes, come back and simply buffer with a microfibre cloth and you should find all the hard water stains have disappeared! (Warning.. your rooms may smell a bit like a fish and chippy for an hour after).

  • Squirt Some Dish Soap Down the Drain

Finding your drains are well, draining a little slow? Then a quick solution couldn’t be easier! Squirt a little dish soap (i.e. fairy liquid) down the drain and run hot water! Dish soap is made to cut through grease, so whether it’s on your pans, dishes or in your drains it’s sure to work.

If you really find this isn’t working for you, also try a dishwasher tablet by placing on the sink drain and dissolving it down the drain with boiling water (not just a hot tap!).

  • Cut a Corner Off Your Sponge

I know, it sounds a bit odd. You know the sponge you use to wash the dishes with? And the sponge you use to wipe down the surfaces? And you can never seem to keep track of which one is which? Easy, just cut the corner off the sponge you do the dirty dishes with and you’ll never get stuck again!

  • Put a Cotton Ball in Your Trash Can

This is one of our favourite finds! Everyones rubbish stinks, there’s no getting around it. But this hack is an absolute game changer, and definitely will help your bins be that little less smelly. Take some cotton balls, or pads and soak them in essential oils and drop it into the bottom of your bin (underneath the liner of he bag). It’s such a simple and cheap way to fight that horrible bin odour and from keeping it from becoming too pungent.

  • Set a Timer

This is something we’re continuously seeing throughout social media at the moment. The idea is simple, set a timer and clean until the alarm goes off! You may finish tasks like washing the dishes a lot quicker than you realise… Or if not, you’ve limited yourself having to do Mundane tasks!

  • Polish a Stainless Steel Sink with Flour

I know, it sounds like defeating the object and making the task of cleaning that much more…. BUT if you have a stainless steel sink, the single best thing you can do for it is this. Wash and dry the sink, sprinkle the whole thing with flour, and then get to buffing. You’ll be surprised at how much your sink will sparkle!

  • Add a Bowl of Vinegar to Your Dishwasher

If you live in an area with hard water, you are probably pretty frustrated with dirty-looking dishes that come out of your dishwasher. There’s a quick and easy solution to help counteract this and that is by putting a bowl of white vinegar right-side-up in your dishwasher. Run the dishwasher, and let the vinegar help combat that hard water so your dishes come out looking spotless.

  • Finally Get Rid of Those Pesky Coffee Stains

Do your cups have those horrible stubborn brown stains that don’t want to come out? The answer: Baking Soda. Sprinkle some into the bottom of your cup, add just enough water to form a paste, and scrub. The gentle abrasion of the baking soda will get rid of stains in a matter of minutes. Then, simply rinse and wash the way you usually would.

  • Get Rid of Smelly Sinks with Baking Soda and Lemon Juice or Vinegar

When you think of all the gross stuff that goes down your drain, it makes sense that it’ll start to smell a bit… Try this natural mixture to help break up the gunk in your pipes and make your sink smell fresher. Pour hot water down your drain, then slowly pour a cup of baking soda down. Finish it off with either a cup of lemon juice or white vinegar and wait for the fizzy chemical reaction. (It’s oddly satisfying!).

  • Clean Your Microwave with Lemons

It really is so easy! Measure about 1/2 cup of water into a bowl. Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the water. Drop the lemon halves into the bowl as well. Place the bowl in the microwave and put on high power for three minutes so the liquid comes to a boil. Let it stand for five minutes, bare in mind do not open the microwave door, the steam trapped inside will help loosen all the lovely food gunk inside. Once that times up, then you can wipe it down!

  • Clean Your Blender in 30 Seconds (Really)

Fill your blender about halfway with warm water, add a drop of dish soap, and let it do it’s thing! If your blender has buildup or is looking a bit dull, you can also add a drop of vinegar or some lemon.
