The Most Unlikely Places to Find Dirt in Your Home!

by Linda Cleans 15 Dec 2023

The dirtiest things in a house can vary depending on various factors such as living habits, cleaning routines, and personal hygiene. However, some commonly identified dirty items or areas in a house may include:

Kitchen Sponges or Dishcloths: A kitchen sponge or dishcloth can harbour bacteria and germs due to their frequent use in cleaning and exposure to food particles and moisture. To clean simply:

Rinse the sponge or dishcloth thoroughly after each use.

Sanitise the sponge by microwaving it on high for one minute or running it through the dishwasher.

Replace the sponge regularly to prevent bacterial buildup.

Cutting Board: Cutting boards, especially those used for raw meats, can accumulate bacteria if not properly cleaned and sanitised after each use.

Wash the cutting board with hot soapy water after each use.

For disinfection, you can apply a solution of one tablespoon of bleach mixed with one litre of water. Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse it off.

Consider using separate cutting boards for different types of foods to prevent cross-contamination.

Bathroom Towels: Bathroom towels can become contaminated with bacteria from regular use, moisture, and lack of frequent washing.

Launder bathroom towels regularly, ideally after every three to four uses.

Use hot water and a detergent to wash the towels.

Avoid sharing towels with others to minimise the spread of germs.

TV Remote Control: TV remote controls are used by multiple individuals and are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. They can carry bacteria and potentially spread germs, no wonder everyone in a household ends up getting sick!

Remove the batteries from the remote control.

Wipe the remote control with a disinfecting wipe or a cloth dampened with a solution of water and mild detergent.

Pay attention to the crevices and buttons while cleaning.

Allow the remote control to air dry before inserting the batteries.

Computer Keyboard and Mouse: Computer keyboards and mice can accumulate dust, food crumbs, and bacteria over time if not regularly cleaned.

Shake out any loose debris from the keyboard and mouse.

Use compressed air or a small brush to remove dust and crumbs from between the keys.

Clean the surface with a cloth dampened with a solution of water and mild detergent.

Allow the keyboard and mouse to dry completely before use.

Light Switches: Light switches are frequently touched but not often cleaned, making them potential hotspots for germs and bacteria.

Turn off the power to the switch before cleaning.

Wipe the surface of the light switch with a disinfecting wipe or a cloth dampened with a solution of water and mild detergent.

Dry the switch thoroughly before turning the power back on.

It's important to establish regular cleaning routines and proper hygiene practices to maintain a clean and healthy living environment. Please note that these examples are not exhaustive, and the level of cleanliness can vary from house to house based on individual habits and cleaning practices.
