How to Clean a Sofa šŸ›‹ļøšŸ§¼

by Matt Wanless 25 Sep 2026

Your sofa probably gets more use than almost anything else in your home. Whether you're watching television, enjoying a cuppa or sharing the sofa with your four-legged friend, it's no surprise that it can start looking a little worse for wear!

Between muddy paws, pet hair, crumbs, accidental spills and the occasional mystery stain, your sofa can collect quite a bit of dirt over time.

But before you reach for the cleaning products and start scrubbing away, there are a few things you should know about cleaning your sofa.

Before You Start Cleaning Your Sofa

First things first, check what material your sofa is made from and read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.

Not all sofas can be cleaned in the same way. Some fabrics can tolerate water-based cleaning products, while others require specialist cleaning or should only be vacuumed.

If your sofa has a cleaning code, here's what it generally means:

  • W: Water-based cleaning products can be used.
  • S: Solvent-based cleaning products only.
  • W/S: Either water-based or solvent-based cleaning products can be used.
  • X: Vacuuming or light brushing only. Avoid liquid cleaners.

If you're unsure about your sofa's material or can't find its cleaning instructions, stick to removing loose dirt and consider professional advice before attempting a wet clean.

How to Clean a Fabric Sofa

Once you've checked your sofa's cleaning instructions, it's time to get started!

1. Remove loose dirt and debris

Start by removing any loose cushions and giving your sofa a thorough vacuum. Pay particular attention to the gaps between cushions and along the arms, where crumbs, dust and all sorts of other things have a habit of disappearing.

If you've got pets, you'll probably have quite a bit of hair to deal with, too. We'll get to that shortly!

2. Prepare your cleaning solution

If your sofa is suitable for water-based cleaning, prepare an upholstery cleaning solution according to the product's instructions.

Always test your chosen cleaner on a small, hidden area first and allow it to dry completely. The last thing you want is to turn a small cleaning job into a much bigger problem!

3. Gently clean the upholstery

Using a suitable microfibre cloth, gently clean the fabric according to your sofa's care instructions.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing, particularly on delicate fabrics, as this can affect the appearance and texture of the upholstery.

And remember, more cleaning solution doesn't necessarily mean a cleaner sofa!

4. Allow your sofa to dry

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when cleaning upholstery is using too much water.

Excess moisture can take a long time to dry and may leave watermarks or unwanted smells behind.

Once you've finished cleaning, allow your sofa to dry completely in a well-ventilated room before putting the cushions back or settling down for the evening.

How to Remove Stains From a Sofa

Spilt your morning coffee? Dropped something on the sofa while enjoying your dinner? We've all been there!

When dealing with a fresh spill, the important thing is to act quickly.

Start by gently blotting the affected area with a clean, absorbent cloth to remove as much of the spill as possible. Avoid rubbing it into the upholstery, as this can spread the stain further.

Once you've removed the excess liquid, check your sofa's cleaning instructions before applying a suitable stain remover.

Different stains and upholstery materials require different treatments, so don't assume that one cleaning product will work on everything.

For particularly stubborn stains or delicate upholstery, professional cleaning may be the safer option.

How to Remove Pet Hair From a Sofa

Now, if you've got a dog or cat, you'll know that keeping pet hair off the sofa can feel like a never-ending battle!

Somehow, no matter how often you clean, there's always more hair. And if your pet has a favourite spot on the sofa, you'll probably know exactly where to look.

Vacuuming is a good starting point, but pet hair can become embedded in upholstery, making it difficult to remove with suction alone.

This is where a dedicated pet hair removal tool can come in handy.

Our Square Pet Hair Remover Tool is designed to lift and collect stubborn pet hair from sofas, upholstery and other fabric surfaces.

Its compact, reusable design makes it a handy option for regularly removing pet hair without constantly getting through disposable lint rollers.

Simply work over the affected areas to collect the hair, taking care to test it on a hidden area first and avoid using it on delicate or easily snagged fabrics.

Once you've collected the hair, give the sofa another quick vacuum to pick up anything you've missed.

How to Keep Your Sofa Clean

You don't necessarily need to give your sofa a deep clean every time it starts looking a little grubby. A few simple habits can help keep it looking its best between cleans.

Try vacuuming your sofa regularly, particularly underneath and between the cushions. If you've got pets, removing loose hair before it becomes embedded in the fabric can make your next cleaning session much easier.

Deal with accidental spills as soon as possible, and keep a clean microfibre cloth handy for those unexpected moments.

And if your dog has decided that the sofa is actually their sofa? Well, keeping a pet hair remover nearby certainly wouldn't hurt!

A Clean Sofa Without the Fuss

Whether you're tackling pet hair, an accidental spill or simply giving your sofa a much-needed refresh, the trick is knowing what your upholstery can handle before you start cleaning.

Remove loose dirt first, use cleaning products suitable for your sofa's fabric and avoid getting the upholstery unnecessarily wet.

A little regular maintenance can save you a much bigger cleaning job further down the line. And hopefully, you'll spend a lot more time relaxing on your sofa than cleaning it!
